What to keep

  • Hertz means cycles per second; it does not describe loudness, energy or a health effect.
  • Web Audio works with digital samples. A value in the browser is not a promise of a particular voltage or sound-pressure level.
  • Very low rates may be perceived through their harmonics, modulation or physical vibration rather than as a conventional musical pitch.
01

The number is only the beginning

Frequency describes repetition. A 369 Hz sine completes 369 cycles each second. Waveform describes how each cycle changes over time, while amplitude describes its digital level. Those are separate properties.

Hearing is a chain: pressure variations enter the ear, move the eardrum and middle-ear bones, create fluid motion in the cochlea and are converted into neural signals. The output device and the listener are therefore part of every real experiment.

02

What Web Audio guarantees

The Web Audio specification defines an audio-processing graph and 32-bit floating-point PCM values. At the destination, the nominal signal range is −1 to +1. The specification does not define the analogue voltage at a headphone socket, the sound pressure at the ear or whether a hardware path passes a DC component.

Frequency Master deliberately keeps its generated carrier mono. The same program signal feeds both output channels, while the browser and operating system complete the path to the device.

03

Why low frequencies sound different

A 7.83 Hz sine lies below conventional pitch perception and many playback systems attenuate it heavily. A shaped low-frequency waveform contains harmonics above the fundamental. Those higher components can make the repetition audible even when the fundamental itself is weak.

The studio therefore lets you compare waveforms at 0.5–20 Hz. Harmonic-rich shapes may make the repetition easier to hear, but results depend on the playback device and do not mean the fundamental itself is reproduced.

04

A better experiment

Change one variable at a time, begin at low volume and record the waveform, frequency, device and listening conditions. Treat subjective impressions as observations. They can inspire a test, but they are not automatically proof of a general effect.
