What to keep

  • A binaural beat requires two slightly different tones delivered separately to the two ears.
  • A mono signal played equally left and right is not a binaural-beat stimulus.
  • Recent reviews report possible benefits in selected settings alongside high heterogeneity, small samples and inconsistent physiological evidence.
01

What the effect is

When a different pure tone is delivered to each ear, a listener may perceive an additional rhythmic fluctuation related to the frequency difference. This is a perceptual phenomenon created by the auditory system.

Frequency Master currently produces mono audio, so it does not create a conventional binaural beat. Its amplitude modulation is a physical change in the level of one shared carrier signal.

02

Perception is not the same as entrainment

A 2023 systematic review examined whether binaural stimulation consistently changes measured brain oscillations. The included studies differed in frequencies, exposure times, measurements and controls, and the overall pattern did not support a simple, reliable entrainment claim.

A 2024 review covering music, ambient noise, white noise and binaural beats found mixed or insufficient evidence connecting autonomic arousal measures with cognitive performance.

03

Why some clinical results still look interesting

More recent reviews have reported reductions in outcomes such as perioperative anxiety or pain in some groups. Those results justify better trials, but large differences between studies make a single universal effect unlikely.

A positive average result in a controlled context does not establish that one named beat frequency treats a condition, works for everyone or replaces clinical care.

04

How we label the evidence

We call this area mixed evidence: a plausible and measurable auditory stimulus, some encouraging outcomes, and substantial uncertainty about mechanisms, repeatability, dose and long-term relevance.
